Sculpture allows me to investigate matter as a living and constantly

transforming substance, in which bodies, landscapes, and living organisms continuously emerge, dissolve, and reconfigure themselves.

​

Starting from moulds taken directly from the human body, while also leaving the imprint of my own body throughout the working process, my sculptures retain the physical trace of a real presence. The mould thus acts as a witness to memory. At a time when images and forms can be artificially generated, I am interested in sculpture continuing to emerge from contact, matter, and physical experience, within a process of transformation that never truly ends.

BIO

 

Born in Lisbon, 1985, Gil Gelpi does his first art studies at Ar.Co and Antonio Arroio art schools before finishing his film studies in E.S.T.C. university, where he met with professor Rafael Godinho, translator of most of Deleuze's work to Portuguese. He wins an artist exchange program in 2009, doing his first solo exhibition at the Magyar Muhely Galeria in Budapest. Also in 2009 he moves to Barcelona to study sculpture at Escola Massana. In 2011 he starts working for the sculptor Samuel Salcedo, until 2017. In 2018 he teaches sculpture at the Escola de Cerámica de la Bisbal. He now lives between Sintra, Portugal and Barcelona, Spain. His works are present in many private collections in Canada, U.S.A., México, Austria, U.K., Slovakia, Luxembourg, Spain and Portugal.
